Rapid City Medical Center offers extensive osteoporosis screening to help accurately calculate the risk of decreased bone strength before it’s too late. Bone health is evaluated with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry technology, also known as DEXA. These scans provide bone mineral density assessment of skeletal health to accurately calculate your risk of breaking bones and monitor treatment progress.
The DEXA scan is a simple, low dose, noninvasive scan of the hips and spine and requires no specific preparation. The World Health Organization standards are used to evaluate bone mineral density. A baseline DEXA scan can be performed for women and men who have osteoporotic risk factors and women who have reached menopause.
