Women who undergo routine mammograms in our Women’s Healthcare at the Rapid City Medical Center now have the latest technology available to them, digital mammography.

Starting June 24th , 2009 the Rapid City Medical Center added the latest technology available in detecting breast cancer to our Women’s HealthCare Department in Radiology. We selected the Selenia digital mammography system from Hologic. Digital mammography is quickly becoming the standard in breast imaging and is the best tool for early diagnosis, giving patients a much better chance of survival and leading a long, productive life.

The mammography exam is still acquired in the same manner as in the past. This newest technology for breast cancer detection is different from conventional mammography in how the image is viewed. Most importantly the radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images. These features allow the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern.

Our focus at the Rapid City Medical Center is to continue to offer high quality health care. Our Mammography Department is ACR accredited with a FDA mammography license.
