Dr. White was born and raised in Doland, a tiny farming community 20 miles east of Redfield. His journey to Rapid City was not a direct route. It included stops in Vermillion, where he did his undergraduate studies at the University of South Dakota, and Iowa, where he studied medicine at Des Moines University. He also trained in Detroit and practiced medicine in Cincinnati for nine years.
He returned to his home state in January 2010. "I decided to come back to help the people of South Dakota," he said. He comes from a close-knit family -- five brothers and one sister, and they all live in South Dakota.
Many of his patients have allergies and other chronic conditions that flare up from time to time, and he's been able to offer them ongoing care. In the process, he has also gotten to know them -- rare for a surgical specialist.
At Rapid City Medical Center, Dr. White believes the variety of medical specialties and experience under one roof offer the best possible outcome for patients. "I can step into the hallway and consult a gastroenterologist, or I can pick up the phone and say 'Can you take a look?,'" he said. "And the other doctors have a very direct route to our department."
